In the painful stalemate of domestic violence, the deepest bond is often not "hatred," but rather the unbearable "inability to separate" felt by both sides.
How we understand violence determines how we respond to it.
From the perspective of Bowen Family Systems Theory, "violence" is not simply an isolated, individual act—it is a mutual loss of control within a relationship. Both parties exist in a state of extreme emotional reactivity, intensely pulling at one another, until they are trapped in a recurring nightmare: unable to live together, yet unable to tear apart.
How do we begin to break this deadlock?

Tobey holds a Master’s degree in Family-Grounded Practice and Family Therapy from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and is a Certified Marriage and Family Therapist with the Hong Kong Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (HKAMFT). With over 16 years of experience in family counseling, she has served as a Senior Social Worker at an Integrated Family Service Centre (IFSC) and as a Part-time Fieldwork Supervisor for social work students at The University of Hong Kong. Tobey brings extensive clinical expertise, particularly in handling domestic violence cases.
Currently based in the United States, she continues her professional family therapy practice while serving as an Associate Supervisor with the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). Driven by a commitment to excellence, she actively pursues advanced studies in Bowen Family Systems Theory in the US, integrating its principles directly into her clinical practice.
